FAQ

  • I want to submit an article to NKR. What do I need to do?
First, be sure that your article falls within the scope of our journal. Second, make sure you read our style guide (available here on the website on the submissions page) and edit your article to conform to our reference style and change your abstract to a structured abstract (see style guide.) Then send the article to nkrjournal@gmail.com Please give us at least 1 week to confirm receipt of your submission before inquiring about it.
  • How long does the peer review process take?
Since being indexed on Scopus in 2020, NKR receives dozens of articles prior to the publication of each issue. This means our editorial staff has to do a great deal of work to find reviewers, send reviews, and remind reviewers of their deadlines. As with most academic journals, NKR reviewers are unpaid and agree to review articles out of professional courtesy and can’t be held to a hard deadline so sometimes it takes longer than expected. Therefore, peer review can be completed as quickly as 3 months or as slowly as 6 months.
  • What is the scope of NKR?
NKR publishes articles in all academic fields of study related to North Korea. These may include but are not limited to proliferation studies, geography, domestic politics, international relations, peace studies, security, history, foreign policy, and international law.
  • What publication fees do I have to pay to publish in NKR?
NKR has no publication fees. Authors who successfully pass peer review are entitled to one free copy of the issue their article appears in and an electronic copy for personal use. Extra copies may be purchased from our publisher, McFarland.
  • What is the preferred format for submissions?
Please submit your article via email to NKRjournal@gmail.com and be sure it conforms to the NKR style guide available on our website.
  • I haven’t heard any updates from the editorial staff about the peer review of my article, should I contact the editorial staff?
If you have not heard from the editorial staff, it means that your article is still under consideration. If you contact the staff before 6 months has passed, the staff is forced to spend time responding to emails and to tell the author to be patient. If 6 months has passed and you haven’t heard back from NKR about your peer review, please feel free to email for an update.
  • I submitted my article after I saw a call for papers for an issue. Now I see that the issue has been published. What does that mean for my submission?
NKR puts out calls for papers prior to the Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall issues but that doesn’t mean articles submitted before those issues will be ready for publication in time for those issues. Due to delays in peer review or revisions, NKR cannot guarantee that the peer review of an article will be completed quickly enough to appear in any issue. Additionally, NKR publishes articles in the order that they pass peer review so sometimes an issue is full and articles that pass peer review must be carried over to the next issue. All submissions are given full consideration and will be published in a subsequent issue if they pass peer review.
  • My article was published in NKR but I don’t see it on JSTOR or Heinonline or Proquest or Scopus right away. What should I do?
NKR only edits and publishes the journal. The articles are uploaded to all the online indices following publication. Unfortunately, these services can experience significant delays in updating and adding articles for journals. NKR has no control over this and seldom gets responses when we do inquire about these delays. Please just be patient and, if a delay of more than 6 months occurs, feel free to contact us. We can contact the online services on your behalf but cannot promise a reply or prompt response.
